THE South Yarra home of one of Melbourne’s first ever elected councillors is up for grabs.

The house built in 1856 for John Thomas Smith at 30 Darling St is on the market with $5.9 million to $6.4 million expectations.

Smith, a seven-time mayor of Melbourne and among the first councillors ever elected for the city in 1842, built the home known as Darling House within walking distance of the CBD where he also operated including the Adelphi Hotel in Flinders Lane and St John’s Tavern in Queen St.

Today the seven-bedroom home is also a stroll from the Botanic Gardens, transport, local shops and eateries.

Kay & Burton sales agent Emma Bloom said buyers inspecting the property so far have appreciated the character and period detail of the home, as well as its location.

“People love the offering and the fact that it’s a stand-alone Victorian in such a hot location,” Ms Bloom said.

“It’s hard to come buy that sort of property in South Yarra.”

The house still features polished floorboards, high skirting boards as well as marble fireplaces from when it was built more than 150 years ago.

A lower-ground apartment has a wine cellar as well as living spaces and bedrooms.

Courtesy of the vendors, the home also offers more modern spaces, including a contemporary kitchen with Italiana benchtops, Neff and Miele appliances, and a butler’s pantry.

The 610sq m property comes with mature trees and low-maintenance gardens.
