A woman charged with the murder of her husband on a camping trip “doesn’t recall anything” about the alleged incident, it has been claimed.

Ilknur Caliskan allegedly killed Serdar, her husband of 25 years, while the couple were enjoying a break with friends at Mount Disappointment, in the Great Dividing Range north of Melbourne, on Saturday night.

A lawyer acting on behalf of the family said the alleged incident happened in front of three couples as the group sat around a campfire.

The couple’s adult children said their parents were “very happy” and had just got back from an overseas trip to Turkey two weeks ago, the Herald Sun reported.

Mrs Caliskan’s lawyer Marcus Denning said she was “not in a position where she understands anything about that night”.

“She doesn’t recall anything to do with any type of violence,” Mr Denning said.

“What has transpired has happened in the context of people sitting around a campfire.”

Mr and Mrs Caliskan lived with their adult son and daughter in Craigieburn, Melbourne.

“It’s an unusual case with no evidence of intention to commit homicide, no motive, and no evidence of prior violence,” said Mr Denning.

“It’s just a horrible event.

“Her immediate family have said they love their mother, they will stand by her and they will help as much as they can to get her the treatment she needs.”

Mrs Caliskan, 46, sobbed as she stood in the dock of Shepparton Magistrates Court on Monday.

She has been remanded in custody and has been booked in for a forensic psychiatric assessment at the end of the month.

“We’re hoping that will illuminate for the public, the family and the courts to the status of her mental health,” Mr Denning said.

Emergency services were called to remote bushland near Clonbinane, north of Melbourne, at 11.30pm on Saturday where they found Mr Caliskan, 50, suffering from a stab wound.

He died at the scene.

Mrs Caliskan was arrested at the scene and charged with murder on Sunday afternoon.

She will return to court for a committal mention on December 19.
